Fattorio Montecchio 'Etrusco' Toscana (super Tuscan) IGT
In the 1970s, a cabal of Tuscan winemakers wanted to break away from the strict confines of the appellations. It was the start of a push to make wines featuring non-traditional and non-native grape varieties, especially French grapes such as Cabernet and Merlot. Many of the high quality producers in the region now produce a 'Super-Tuscan' style of wine, with a nod towards the Bordeaux region's style of winemaking.
Fattorio Montecchio offers up four such wines, ranging from a pure Sangiovese aged in terracotta amphora, Bordeaux-style wines of Cabernet and Merlot, and our favourite of the bunch. Etrusco is a blend of 80% Cabernet and 20% Sangiovese. The name being a nod to the Etruscan culture that flourished in the region before the rise of the Roman Empire.
Warm fermented in stainless steel, malolactic ferment in tank before aging in French oak barriques for 18 months. Balance and elegance, together with aromatic finesse and sophisticated flavor. Roasted nuts, grilled meat, porcini mushrooms and vanilla. rich dark fruit, with a lightness yet intensity and a very long satisfying finish.
