Al Cantara 'O Scuru o Scuro' Etna Rosso DOC
A superb example of Etna Rosso, and why the Etna wines enjoy a meteoric rise in fame across the world. This is produced from low-yielding Nerello Mascalese vines over 80 years old. Hand picked, steel fermented before 10 months aging in French oak Tonneau.
The name of the wine comes from the sonnet by the famous Sicilian poet Nino Martoglio. "Deep Dark" is a beautiful poem by Nino Martoglio. It was published in 1895 with illustrations by his brother Giovanni. The poem is part of the famous book "La Centona," which is dedicated to Luigi Capuana, a well-known Sicilian writer. The poet Martoglio in this compendium describes the Sicilian "mafia" of the time.
An exotic nose of blueberry, blackberry and pistachio, rose petal and wild herbs. Rich and very complex wine, forest fruits, ripe strawberry, obvious oaky notes, with spice and vanilla. Immaculate.
Al-Cantara has been awarded the title of "Winery of the Year Gran Vinitaly 2023" for its wines receiving the highest scores awarded by an international jury.
The winery takes its name from the river that, on the slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily, in Randazzo, close to Al-Cantara's land and cellars. The name "Al-Cantàra," which means "bridge" in Arabic, is meant to emphasize the link with Sicily and symbolizes the harmonious and innovative combination of wine, art and poetry that is the winery's hallmark. Not surprisingly, the names of the wines are inspired by poems by Sicilian authors.
The vineyards sit atabout 620 metres above sea level, where warm days and cool nights encourage a long ripening period concentrating the flavours in the grapes while retaining balancing acidity. The soil is permeable to air and water and is rich in pumice stone and micro-elements, which allow the plants to produce a complex aromatic profile. The espalier-trained vines are spur pruned. The vineyard is cultivated following the principles of organic and biodynamic cultivation and is in conversion to organic status.
