Tasting Note
AOC Cote Rotie
The Northern Rhone is the birthplace of Syrah, as a natural cross breed between two obscure grapes from the Ardeche and Savoy regions, meeting together where the Rhone River carves its way through steep granite hillsides.
Along with Hermitage, the top wines in the Northern Rhone come from the steep slopes of 'Cote Rotie'. literally translating to Roasted Slope. The steep terraced vineyards bring maximum sun and heat to the granite soils to bring optimum ripeness to the Syrah grapes. French Syrah differs significantly from the Australian style of Syrah - and showcases simultaneously floral, spicy and meaty characters, power and finesse. This example has a tiny portion of Viognier co-fermented. Exceptional work on the vines and in the winery make this a fine wine to watch. Glorious dark ruby colour with oak and vanilla on the nose, giving way to cassis and blueberry. Rich, savoury palate with ripe tannins. Well-balanced with a long, pleasant finish.
Best aged for a further 3-10 years but drinking well now especially if decanted for an hour or more.
