This Group of works are inspired by the traditional Kowhaiwhai pattern - Te pitau a Mania (The fern frond of Manaia) Which relates to the Manaia figure seen in whakairo (Carving).

Manaia is a mythological creature who serves as a messenger between the mortal and spirit worlds. It is a common motif seen in both wood and Pounamu (Greenstone) carvings.
