The little Rock Wren (Piwauwau), is New Zealand's only alpine bird. It is found in the Southern Alps of New Zealand's South Island. It spends most of its time on the ground, hopping & bobbing about in search of food. When the Rock Wren does fly, it does so close to the ground! Building its nest deep within cracks in the rocks, it is able to maintain a warm environment, even when it is freezing outside. However, this also makes it an easy target for stoats & mice.
