Artist:
Cathy Schuster
Catherine is a weaver who specialises in piupiu making, kakahu (cloaks), and tukutuku (woven wall panels).
She was mentored in the early years by her mother-in-law Emily, and has gained much of her knowledge alongside her husband James, while assisting with some of the many marae restoration projects they have been involved with, and also from her many weaving friends.
She particularly enjoys the harvesting and processing of the natural resources required, from areas close to home at Lake Rotoiti.
Retention of traditional arts and knowledge around weaving, for future generations, is at the heart of her practice as a weaver.
