Cast Glass Purerehua - Lime & Teal on a Perspex Stand

- Mike Cameron

This Maori-made Purerehua, created by renowned artist Mike Cameron, is a contemporary musical instrument crafted from cast glass. With careful planning and a strong foundation in rangahau (research), Mike produces truly stunning artworks from his home studio in Whangārei, Aotearoa's Northland.

To create its unique sound, the Purerehua is swung vigorously above the head after being twirled while hanging downwards. The resulting sound resembles the flapping of bird's wings or the buzzing of insects, making it a valuable tool for calling rain, attracting lizards, and adding a special touch to tangi ceremonies. In fact, the Purerehua is also known as "Rangorango" due to its similarity to the buzzing of blowflies (Rango).
