Te Heke Green - Original Carved Painting 800mm Diameter

- Hikurangi Edwards

Hikurangi Edwards is a Māori Artist based in Pōneke / Wellington, New Zealand.

Hikurangi applies layers of acrylic paint to custom-made framed plyboard & then steadily carves through the layers of paint - exposing the multiple colours layered beneath. The results are textured images rendered in negative relief that accentuates the stunning tonal variations & hand-carved details.

"Te Heke tells stories of our people migrating from their homelands to find a new home due to inter-tribal war. In particular, the high chief Te Rauparaha of Ngāti Toarangatira chose to bring his people south from Kawhia to Kāpiti, Wellington and the top of the South Island. The tribe traversed through Taranaki and faced many adversities on their way, in the hope of finding a new safe home.

The koru represent individuals and families, some scouting ahead then returning for the young or elderly, some taking a more direct path while others travelled a longer but safer journey. This story reminds us that we’re all on a journey and sometimes we take different paths to get to where we need to be."
