The L002 pleco, also known as the tiger pleco or Panaqolus sp., is a small, visually striking catfish. Its bold pattern and distinctive colouration, with dark, tiger-like vertical stripes against a lighter brown or tan body, make it a unique addition to any aquarium. Its robust, slightly flattened body is designed for clinging to surfaces in fast-flowing waters, and its well-developed fins aid in stability and manoeuvrability in strong currents.

The L002 pleco is native to the fast-flowing rivers and streams in the Amazon Basin. These environments are characterised by their rocky substrates and dense wood debris, which the plecos use for both hiding and foraging. The water in these areas is typically well-oxygenated due to the rapid flow, and the presence of submerged wood provides essential dietary resources, as these plecos are known for their wood-eating behaviour.

Setting up an aquarium for the L002 pleco, or tiger pleco, involves creating an environment that closely mimics its natural habitat. Start with a sandy or fine gravel substrate to emulate riverbeds, and include plenty of driftwood and rocks, as these plecos enjoy hiding and grazing on wood. Ensure the tank has moderate to strong water flow, achieved through a good filtration system and possibly additional powerheads, to replicate their fast-flowing river environment. Lighting should be subdued, as these fish prefer dimmer conditions; floating plants or low-light species like Java fern and Anubias can help achieve this and provide additional cover. For tank mates, choose peaceful, non-aggressive species that thrive in similar water conditions, such as small tetras or other gentle catfish, to ensure a harmonious community tank

The L002 pleco, or tiger pleco, primarily feeds on wood and biofilm. To replicate this diet in a home aquarium, provide ample driftwood for grazing. Supplement with high-quality sinking algae wafers, pleco-specific pellets, and occasionally blanched vegetables like zucchini and spinach. For added variety, offer small amounts of protein-rich foods like brine shrimp or bloodworms sparingly.

Breeding the L002 pleco, or tiger pleco, in a home aquarium requires replicating their natural spawning conditions. Set up a dedicated breeding tank with soft, slightly acidic water and plenty of driftwood and caves, as these plecos prefer to lay their eggs in secure, enclosed spaces. Maintain dim lighting to reduce stress and mimic their natural habitat. Conditioning the breeding pair with a high-protein diet, including live or frozen foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp, can encourage spawning. Once the eggs are laid and fertilised, the male will guard them until they hatch, which typically takes about a week. After hatching, the fry can be fed a diet of crushed algae wafers and finely powdered spirulina to ensure healthy growth

Dead on Arrival (DOA) Policy : In the unfortunate event that your fish arrives dead, please follow these steps: Within 12 hours of the delivery, take clear, unopened bag pictures showing the deceased fish. Send these photographs and your order number to our email at getfish@thefishroom.co.nz or to our page, and we will then offer a refund or store credit for the cost of the fish.

Two-Week Guarantee Policy: We stand behind the health and quality of our fish, which is why we offer a two-week guarantee starting from the day of delivery. If your fish dies within this time frame, adhere to the following procedure: Take clear photos of the deceased fish. Using a reliable test kit, document water parameters (pH, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite levels) via a dated image. Please email us the photographs, water parameters, and order number to getfish@thefishroom.co.nz or our page. After reviewing your claim, if approved, we will issue a store credit for the cost of the fish. Our two-week guarantee does not cover fish deaths due to unsuitable water conditions, incompatible tank mates or "disasters", i.e. a heater overheating. To prevent such situations, we recommend thoroughly researching each fish species' needs before introducing them to your aquarium.
