Marshmallow root is demulcent and emollient which means it soothes tissue and has a prebiotic action on the gut flora when taken internally. It contains polysaccharides and some tannins which astringe the tissue. It has a pleasant smell and sweet taste and has been used in the past to flavour candy.

Herbalists use Marshmallow to soothe the gut lining and provide the bacteria with natural fibre to feed and create a healthy environment internally. Marshmallow soothes the gut on its way through and lowers inflammtion in the gut wall. It also triggers a reflex which soothes the lung tissue so it is used in cough syrups.
