Eyebright is mainly used to reduce upper respiratory catarrh so it is useful for allergic rhinitis, colds, and fluid in the ear. It is used externally to treat eye conditions as an eye wash or compress.

It has been shown in skin cell line studies to reduce the damage from UVB oxidation. (2)

A similar assessment on corneal cells found it to be an effective antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. (3) Anecdotally we have found it to help with glare from the sun and for some eye disorders.

Eyebright is not found often in research so its use is traditional and based on current clinical usage. However a recent study found that it could help treat ocular discharge in preterm neonates, by lessening reddening and tearing as an eyedrop. Conjunctivitis trials with Eyebright eyedrops shows improvements of outcomes in 85% of patients and a complete recovery within a week for 81% of participants. (4)
