Rita Angus, 'Rutu', 1951 - Print - wholesale

Angus was a prolific New Zealand artist who paved the way for female artists through her landscapes and self-portraits. She became a leading pioneer in the creation of a New Zealand style in her early career. Kiwi art critic, Hamish Keith dubbed this style of art as “New Zealandism".
Angus’s appreciation of Buddhism is represented by the lotus flower in ‘Rutu’. There is an idelisation of the Virgin Mary with the halo as well as bicultural blending by Angus depicting herself as part Maori and part European.
