KAWAKAWA CASTILE SOAP with volcanic clay.

Our Kawakawa soap is a Castile Soap composed of 75% kawakawa infused olive oil which is made with a cold infusion for a minimum of 8 weeks. We do not add any fragrance to this soap so it has a very mild, distinctive natural scent.

Following Māori tradition where harvesting kawakawa leaves involves a respectful and sustainable approach. The leaves are carefully selected by hand, ensuring to gather only what is necessary while leaving ample foliage for the plant's health and sustainability. Timing is crucial, typically during spring or early summer when the leaves are richest in medicinal compounds and at their peak vitality.

An interesting aspect of Māori harvesting protocol includes the consideration of leaves that have been nibbled by the kawakawa looper moth caterpillar (Cleora scriptaria). Rather than discarding these leaves, which may show signs of being partially eaten, Māori tradition views them as potentially having enhanced medicinal properties. This is because the caterpillar's feeding process can stimulate the plant to produce more beneficial compounds as a defense mechanism. As such, these partially eaten leaves may be selectively gathered alongside intact leaves for medicinal and ceremonial use.

This sustainable harvesting practice reflects Māori cultural values of reciprocity and respect for nature, ensuring that harvesting activities contribute to the ongoing health and balance of the natural environment.
