Rimu Maori Heart Shaped Ngakau Trinket or Jewellery Box

This beautiful heart shaped Ngakau Trinket or Jewellery Box is handmade from one of New Zealand's most beautiful native timbers, Rimu (pronounced Ree-Moo).

Rimu has a beautiful grain, in a honey coloured timber. Prized for making everything from jewellery to furniture. This box is made from recycled rimu.

The lid of this keepsake box features an engraved design inspired by the kowhaiwhai design, Puhoro. By blending traditional Maori aesthetics with contemporary design, the result is something that feels both modern and nostalgic, exuding authenticity and cultural significance.

The Puhoro design stems from the deep bond Maori have with water and navigation. When a hoe (paddle) hits the water, ripples and waves form, trailing behind the moving canoe (waka). This fluid movement reflects the Puhoro pattern. Just as the paddle propels the canoe, the Puhoro symbolizes life's momentum, journey, and continual movement.
