This Maori Bone Manaia Necklace combines a decorative necklace with a functional wind instrument, the Porotiti.
The porotiti is a humming disc, with the sound made by centring the bone carving on the cords, holding the cords in two hands, and twirling the cord to make the disc spin.
The kaitiaki (guardian) associated with the porotiti is Tawhirimatea, the God of the Winds.
The porotiti makes a soft humming sound. It is considered to be a healing disc, played above sleeping babies to break up mucus in blocked noses and ears.
This porotiti measures approximately 8.8cm x 3.8cm (3 1/2" x 1 1/2").
Shipped worldwide from New Zealand.
