38cm Carved Wahaika Replica Club

This 38cm (15") Carved Wahaika is a replica of the wahaika club used by pre-European Maori.

Waha-ika means "mouth of the fish", because of the notched convex side of the weapon. The human figure carved on the concave side is called a pūkaiora, a war God to guard the warrior during battle. At the top end of the handle is a whiti, a small head also seen as a guardian.

Wahaika were traditionally made from native hardwoods or whalebone. This one has been made from a sustainably harvested hardwood called Tulip Wood. Tulip Wood is lightweight but very strong, and has an attractive reddish brown hue.

This wahaika is proudly made in Rotorua, New Zealand.
