Book: The Girls in the Kapahaka
The Girls in the Kapa Haka
by Angie Belcher
Penguin Books, 2019, soft cover, 25pp
Angie Belcher is a writer and teacher living in the tiny seaside settlement of Maketu, New Zealand, the landing site of the great Arawa canoe. She wrote The Girls in the Kapahaka after seeing one of the village kuia making piupiu and, later on, watching the children from the Maketu School kapahaka group perform at their local marae.
The Girls in the Kapahaka is a lovely picture story book to read to pre-schoolers, and for junior school students ( up to about age 8) to read for themselves. It's a lovely, easy to read book, about the girls in a kapahaka group and the people and processes that helped the girls finally perform on stage. As well, there's a glossary of the Maori words used in the book.
Great book, great insight for kids in other countries.
