 Ancestress of fire, Mahuika gave this element to the world following the treachery of her grandson Maui as he sought to extinguish the flames that emanated from her fingernails. She hid the last of her fingernails in the forest, safeguarded forever in the puriri, kaikomako and mahoe trees.
