THE PRINT The stylish young woman sprawled on the couch (exhausted no doubt from a rather large night out on the town!) in this 1899 painting by Catalan artist Ramon Casas is commonly referred to as "the young decadent". The Decadent movement was a late-19th-century artistic movement, centred in Western Europe, that followed an aesthetic ideology of excess and artificiality. It was characterised by a belief in the superiority of human fantasy and aesthetic hedonism over logic and the natural world. They no doubt knew how to throw a great party!

Living through a turbulent time in the history of his native Barcelona, he was known as a portraitist, sketching and painting the intellectual, economic, and political elite of Barcelona, Paris, Madrid, and beyond. He was also known for his paintings of crowd scenes ranging from the audience at a bullfight to the assembly for an execution to rioters in the Barcelona streets.
