The tree serves as a valuable source of nectar for bees and is also cultivated for its ornamental beauty. Tannins, used in leather tanning, can be found in its seed shells. Mature trees are able to withstand frost down to at least -12°C. The wood of the tree has a cream-colored base with sleek dark brown patterning, prized in cabinetry and musical instrument production. The species was introduced to Great Britain in 1826 and has since thrived there, as well as in Ireland, New Zealand, and California. It can also be found in smaller numbers in Spain and the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. Optimal growing conditions include temperate oceanic climates with chilly winter temperatures, where frosts are common. In southern New Zealand, this tree has flourished. The first harvest usually occurs after 5 years, while full production takes 7 to 8 years.Although our seed in not intended for human consumption, the seeds of this plant contain approximately 12% protein, 49% oil, and 24% carbohydrates. They are highly sought after in Chile for various applications and boast an impressive amount of monounsaturated fats. Notably, the seeds contain antioxidants such as vitamin E (α-tocotrienol)) and b-carotene. The extracted oil is utilized in some sunscreens, while the pure oil is a popular cosmetic ingredient due to its high levels of omega-7 fatty acids (palmitoleic acid) and beneficial moisturizing qualities. Yield of seeds can vary widely between individual trees.
