In the bush, it's common to encounter impressive clusters of astelia-like foliage perched high on tree trunks. One of its popular names is the "Widow Maker" due to its unpredictable tendency to collapse and fall. It can be grown as an epiphyte or on the ground in dry shaded areas. It typically reaches a height of 1-2 meters and spreads about 1 meter wide.Collospermum can be found throughout the North Island and the upper part of the South Island. It displays tolerance towards various conditions but thrives best in dry shaded environments. The stiff upright leaves can grow well over a meter in length and measure about 8 centimeters in width. The flowers form in clusters of pendulous racemes or stalks, extending approximately 50 centimeters long. These plants are dioecious, meaning the male flowers are found on one plant and the female flowers on another. The flower clusters present an attractive combination of cream and green blooms, adorned with a silvery bract at the base. The female flowers eventually develop into orange/red fruit, which ripen to a translucent shine.
