MATAU NUI

spectacular, rustic, raw and true to its design - the pā kahawai.

Pā Kahawai are a lure that was used throughout Polynesia to troll for fish. This particular design was specifically made to catch Kahawai - a sea trout common in New Zealand waters. The lure was trailed behind canoes - and was a very successful fishing method.

This particular design is a composite of three materials. The back frame is carved from wood, the wood is lined with Pāua Shell and the hook is carved Whale Bone. Trailed in the water, the Pāua shell creates a colourful, fish-like lure which is particular attractive to the Kahawai - it was very effective!

a fabulous trifecta of materials brought together to create a beautiful work of Art to display.

is provided on a stand made of New Zealand Argillite - it is a varied grey/black colour which provides a beautiful contrast to the strong and vibrant colours in the shell. The stand which holds the matau is made from brass.
