FORTY WINKS

- a lovely piece of wearable art for ornithologists and lovers of the exotic!

a magnificent piece, hand carved from cow bone. The eyes are made from goat horn. This piece was carved for us by Fumio Noguchi. He has carved this with incredible attention to detail, but also with a lovely creative flair.

The Huia is a, now extinct, native bird of New Zealand. They were a little 'ecologically naive' and being poor flyers were easy prey for two and four-legged predators! More is the shame because they were a lovely and striking song-bird.

The female had a decurved, longer beak than the male - Fumio has fashioned this carving honouring the more striking female bird. It is a great tribute to another lost icon of our bush.

To Māori the huia was a sacred treasure - only highly ranked chiefs and their family members wore the striking tail feathers in their hair. This was a beautiful and revered bird in New Zealand.

Take a close look at the photos to appreciate the detail of this piece. is a medium sized pendant, and looks fantastic when worn.

We will supply this with a hand-plaited, adjustable cord in colours flax and burnt gold, with a burnt gold floret. The Burnt Gold replicates the colour of the wattles these birds had.

We have added a photo (courtesy of Wikipedia) of a print of a male and female Huia - just to give you a little perspective! One only - Free Shipping Worldwide
