AORAKI
A bold and beautiful manaia matau.
This manaia incorporates the head of a bird, a koru and the tail of a fish - linking the sky, land and sea. These are important symbols down here in the South Pacific.
If you like the photos, take a moment to watch the short video. You will gain an appreciation of the pendant shape and the grain and colour of the bone.
The Manaia: a mythical being believed to be the invisible light, or aura, surrounding a person. They represent spiritual power and are believed to be the guide that leads the spirits to heaven. They are worn to guide and protect.
The Koru: the Māori word for 'loop'. The spiral shaped koru design represents an unfolding silver fern frond. The circular movement towards an inner coil refers to ‘going back to the beginning’. The unfurling frond itself is symbolic of new life, new beginnings, hope and rebirth.
The Hook: The wearer of a Hei-Matau is seen as a provider and protector who is strong willed and determined to succeed in life - what a lovely sentiment to gift to someone important to you.
Deer Antler is quite porous and will absorb body oils. It will take on a golden colour over time. Local belief would say that the pendant becomes a part of you.
