A traditional Toki with Tiki pendant, carved in bone. This piece was carved for us by a new artist - Anthony Bray-Heta.
Anthony is a New Zealand artist and carver working out of his Australian studio - he is an exceptionally talented designer and craftsman who learnt his carving with renowned Master Bone carver - Alan Nopera. He is also a skilled jeweller and combines these talents to produce interesting and eclectic pieces that are a joy to handle and wear.
This Toki is a great example. It is carved from a solid piece of bone, so is tough and made to be worn.
The Tiki is a very ancient symbol and is by far the least understood. There are a number of legends in relation to its meaning. Some legends say the tiki came from the stars and that he was the first man of the world. Often tiki are depicted with webbed feet which suggests a link to the creatures of the sea.
Other legends say tiki was respected as the teacher of all things and the wearer of this symbol is therefore seen to possess clarity of thought, loyalty, great inner knowledge and strength of character.
The toki, or adze, is a symbol of strength. The adze was a key survival tool, so the owner of a good one was believed to be strong and powerful..and this is a good one!
Traditionally, the toki is worn to provide strength and courage to assist through life's challenges.
