WHAKATERE

- Navigate

Hand carved by Andrew Doughty.

In the artists words below.

It is a recognition of mana to be gifted a carving. The subtle differences within each piece of bone makes these handcrafted taonga unique and individualised.

The basis of this carving is a manaia. The name of this piece is Whakatere which means navigate.

The manaia, or spiritual guardian, is the profile of a Tiki. This is symbolic of being half in this world and half in the spirit world. Manaia can be adapted with other symbols and stylized to communicate different meanings, or aspects of life. Like an angel, they are the bearers of messages. As such this is symbolic of navigating our lives with wisdom.

The face of the manaia contains five small koru patterns surrounding the eye (which is a paua inlay). The korus symbolise the awakening of our senses. Below mouth are three main lines which represent the triune nature of our being, that is body, mind and spirit.

The markings above the head of the manaia depict the interconnection between ourselves, the environment, and the spiritual realm. This signifies wholeness.

is a marvellous piece that will certainly draw attention and comment.
