NGĀKAU

seat of affections

The Pā Kahawai is a composite trolling lure that was widely used throughout Polynesia to troll for fish. This particular design was specifically made to target the Kahawai - a sea trout common in New Zealand waters. The lure was trailed behind canoes - and was a very successful fishing method.

This taonga is named meaning 'seat off affections'. The fishhook signifies abundance, nourishment and strength. When worn, the matau, or hook, is believed to provide protection - a safe journey over water.

This fishing lure is a combination of heart Rimu Wood, Bone and Pāua Shell.

The ocean surrounds New Zealand. On our land, there is a whole lot more water in our freshwater lakes and rivers. Therefore, fishing was very important to Māori. Kai moana (fish and shellfish from the sea) played a very key role in nourishing the people.

is a wonderful representation of the significance of fishing to the Māori people. It is regarded as a sacred activity - so the development of various fishing hooks and lures was prevalent within Māori culture.

is a wonderful homage to this tradition by Andrew Doughty.
