KĀHU - Hawk - ARA - to RISE UP, AWAKE, ARISE
A beautiful, hawk pendant, carved in bone. Here's what the artist, Andrew Doughty, has to say about this piece.
This Taonga has been named Ara which means to rise up, awake, arise.
It is based on the Kāhu (Hawk). They gracefully rise on the warm air currents of the day. As they are circling the sky, the Kāhu boast extremely sharp vision. They can spot the slightest movement from vast distances. As such, I have emphasised the eyes with inlays of pāua. They have been carved in a way that reveals pupils. This represents wisdom sight and clarity of mind.
The Kāhu’s eye colours changes as they age, starting out dark and turning yellow. I think this is a nice metaphor that represents our evolving insight and wisdom as we age. Seeing life in more colourful and nuanced ways.
As well as being masters of flight, they are known to be highly intelligent. Selecting and placing stones warmed by the sun into their nest to keep it warm for their young while off hunting for dinner.
This kāhu contains kowhaiwhai designs upon its crown. The design depicts the inner journey we need to traverse and the new beginnings this provides us. Other meanings associated with this are new growth, new beginnings, and spiritual awakening.
The simplicity and spacing of the design upon the beak signify the balance of listening and contributing. KĀHU ARA is carved from natural bone.
Andrew has paired this lovely KĀHU ARA with a Brown adjustable cord.
