Cape Royds
Nigel Brown’s work is iconically New Zealand. He integrates both painted image and text often providing a socio-political commentary on the human encounters (or clashes) between nature and culture.
His work is described as expressionist. The landscapes are rough, and the figures are not anatomically correct but in this they capture the essence of a powerful and relatable artistic language that is very evocative to the viewer.
Brown travelled to the Antarctic as the first artist in the ‘Artist in Antarctica‘ residency programme for the 1997 – 1998 season. This new listing is a work completed in Antarctica during his residency. There is an image, from the Antarctica New Zealand archive, of Nigel working on this piece. 'Painted in the snow outside Shackleton's Hut, Cape Boyd. 1998.'
