Richard McWhannell was born in Akaroa in 1952. He currently lives and works in Auckland. McWhannell studied at the University of Canterbury School of Fine Arts in the 1970s. There he was taught by Rudolf Gopas and made friendships with Toss Woollaston and Tony Fomison. His paintings are influenced by events of the time, telling stories of New Zealand society.

His work is held in numerous public and private collections throughout the country.
