Griffonia simplicifolia is a medicinal plant native to tropical Africa. Considered a shrub of the Caesalpiniaceae family, it flourishes in the wild throughout Central and West Africa. 

Griffonia simplicifolia seeds are commonly taken orally to help with depression. The main active component of the Griffonia simplicifolia plant is  5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), an amino acid produced from another amino acid, tryptophan , which is itself contained in  the diet  (meat, poultry, fish, dairy products, legumes and nuts). 5-HTP acts in the  brain and spinal cord  by increasing the production of  serotonin. Serotonin can affect  sleep, appetite, temperature, sexual behaviour and pain sensation.
