Kowhai Tree Paperweight

. The Kowhai is New Zealands unofficial national flower.
The tree is best known for its brilliant yellow flowers that appear in profusion in spring and stand out among the forest greenery. Native birds such as the tui, bellbird, kaka and New Zealand pigeon all benefit from Kowhai Trees. They feast on leaves and flowers, so Kowhai Trees are an important seasonal nectar food source for them. Maori hold the tree in high esteem, valuing the durability of its hard wood and its many medicinal properties.

These paperweights are built up in layers starting from the hillock on which the trees stand, up through the branches to the canopy. Finally, the whole sculpture is encased in a thick layer of clear glass. The sculpture is worked at between 800 and 1000 degrees Celsius on the end of a steel rod. The tree weight is then cooled slowly in a kiln for about two weeks.
