Alvar Aalto Houses â Materials and Details, a+u

As his firmâs most culturally significant buildings have been recently nominated for UNESCO World Heritage status, A U features the humane, modern architecture of Alvar Aalto. The Finnish architectâs canon would join that of Franceâs Le Corbusier and the American Frank Lloyd Wright. His distinctive use of spatial vibrancy, the interaction between his works and the surrounding landscape, and the balance between materials and details â as the issue title suggests â are presented in photographs and narrative descriptions of 12 villas. This compilation is by Finnish architect and art historian Sirkkaliisa Jetsonen and architectural photographer Jari Jetsonen.
First published in January 1971, a u â Architecture & Urbanism â is an architectural magazine in Japanese and English that provides information on architecture around the globe to a global readership. As Japanâs only monthly periodical dedicated to disseminating information on architecture around the world, a u has been widely and actively read by the architecture community since its inaugural issue. The magazineâs research network extends around the globe, covering more than 100 countries. It features direct reporting on individual architects in various countries, and each issue is edited from a unique perspective to efficiently deliver the latest trends to readers. In addition, essays penned by architects, critics and historians help guide thinking on tomorrowâs architecture, greatly influencing the industry inside and outside Japan.
