Pounamu Hei Matau pendant

This large contemporary pendant is individually hand-carved from genuine New Zealand Pounamu (greenstone). Each piece has unique characteristics formed over millions of years, giving them their own identity, colour and character.

This pendant was handmade for HAPA by Hokitika based Poutini Pounamu (master carver Tyrone Tainui, Ngāi Tahu).

The Hei Matau is carved in the shape of a stylised fish hook, which symbolises strength, prosperity, good luck and safe travel over water.
