Inspired by a term in nature called the “Nuptial Gift"; in the animal kingdom when a male wants to mate with a female he brings a gift, usually food, to show his worthiness to his future partner. I believe this is something we do in relationships , a gift or an act of kindness shows you are highly valued in the relationship. The Tui is giving the gift of a Monarch butterfly to the Fantail, the yellow flowers to represent friendship. I often include a vessel in my paintings, and in The Gift the painted vase is in fact a gift from my husband’s family that we truly love.
