The Porohita is 50 mm long and 47mm wide. It is carved from pounamu we have collected from the Arahura Rive which runs between Greymouth and Hokitika, on the West Coast of the South Island in New Zealand.
The back of the Porohita is shaped/scalloped so that it is comforting to rub while it is worn. However, it can be worn either way for two different looks.
The engraving on the front of the Porohita could represent the family, individual people, generations, places, events, accomplishments or the story of the wearers life. It is up to the wearer or person gifting the Taonga as to what meanings they have.
It also has a traditional ridge-knot binding along the top. This was one of the bindings used by the Maori to attach the pounamu to wooden and bone handles to use as tools and weapons.
The Porohita has a waxed nylon cord so the pendant can be worn ALL the time - even in any kind of water. It is four strands of cord that have been hand platted into a special, round, 4-plait. The cord is adjustable by pinching the special knots between your thumb and finger and pulling.
Pendant Meaning : The Porohita / disc represents the circle of life which has no beginning or end. In life the opportunities are endless so with this pendant you can achieve whatever you want to in life.
