The Westland Wasp was an on-board ZOP (anti-submarine) helicopter of British production with a fixed, four-support landing gear in a classic layout with a main rotor and a tail rotor on a beam. The drive was provided by a single Rolls-Royce Nimbus 103 engine with a capacity of 1050 HP. The flight of the first prototype took place in 1962, and serial production started a year later. A total of about 130 copies of this helicopter were created.
The Westland Wasp was created as a development of the P.531 prototype helicopter and the Saunders-Roe Skeeter machine. When designing it, the emphasis was placed on the smallest possible dimensions allowing this helicopter to operate from small decks of the Royal Navy frigates. In the course of production, only one version of this machine was created, marked as HAS.1 or HAS Mk. I - it was a helicopter intended for ZOP activities. The Westland Wasp was able to carry, for example: two Mk.44 torpedoes, a single Mk.46 torpedo or four SS.11 missiles. In addition to the Royal Navy, the operators of this helicopter were also, for example, Brazil, the Netherlands, Indonesia and South Africa.
