About Petrified Wood: Most petrified wood (AKA fossil wood) results from ancient forests that have been buried beneath deep layers of muddy ash from extreme volcanic eruptions. The wood lies trapped in this virtually oxygen-free environment (preventing decay) for millennia and gradually the organic material is replaced with minerals that echo the form of the original tree in exquisite detail. The colours are almost always the result of metals deposited in the petrified wood. Petrified wood can range in age anywhere from 250 million years old to several thousand years of age - the age of these pieces is unknown.
