Axemen - Three Virgins, Three Versions, Three Visions

Steve McCabe, Bob Brannigan and Stu Kowalski were the core of The Axemen who formed in 1981 in protest against the South African Springbok rugby team tour of New Zealand. The band covered almost 15 years and at times numbered 10 members.

Originally seeing the light of day on the Flying Nun label in 1985 (They recorded three albums for Flying Nun in the 80s/early 90s’), Three Virgins, Three Versions, Three Visions (3Vs) is a broad canvas of sound, there's no other album so chaotic, so brilliantly cacophonous and so totally denying any label, music style or genre.

In the 22 tracks of this album they managed to include every musical style under the sun – from Mark Stewart's mumblings to good-time tunes, from blues played with “big, huge pipe organ" to Krishna chants and from post-punk saxophone-based tracks to muddy guitar noise. The recording and production is totally (and deliberately) DIY.
