- Also known as Dragon Stone, a tri colour concretion composed of Aragonite (brown), Calcite (yellow) and Limestone (grey).
- The name comes from the word 'Septaria,' which is the name for any concretion with internal cavities or cracks. Septarian also seems to form in patterns of seven, the Latin word for this is 'septum.'
- Septarian Nodule was formed around 50 to 70 million years ago during Earth's Cretaceous Period. Sea life during that time were attracted to molten sediment that was produced by massive volcanic eruptions. The sea life died from the eruptions they rested on the ocean floor and their chemical composition combined in the sedimentary rock, forming the nodules we have today. As the water dried out, massive cracks formed internally, making the chemicals from the sea life crystallise and form Aragonite crusts and druse Calcite crystals.
- There are Septarian Concretions here in New Zealand up to 3m in diameter called the Moeraki Boulders, found along the cost near Moeraki. There are also the Koutu Boulders along the south shore of the Hokianga Harbour.
