Rutile, also known historically as Red Schorl, is a rare mineral composed of titanium oxide. It forms in various structures like grains, masses, prismatic crystals, and distinctive needle-like formations. These unique needle-shaped crystals are often found intermixed with minerals like Quartz, Amethyst, and Hematite. They're highly prized and frequently crafted into jewellery pieces. While commonly golden or red, Rutile can also exhibit brown or black hues.

It was first identified in 1803 by A.G. Werner and earned its name from the Latin word "rutilus," translating to "red." This name stemmed from the initial discovery's color, despite the mineral manifesting in other colors too. Sierra Leone in West Africa is a crucial source, contributing over 30% of global Rutile annually. Additionally, countries such as Brazil, Madagascar, Switzerland, and South Africa also play significant roles in Rutile production.
