Meet the awe-inspiring Arctodus simus, one of the largest land-dwelling carnivorous mammals ever discovered! Fossils of this prehistoric giant, known as the short-faced bear, have been found across North America. Unlike modern bears, it had a unique short, deep snout, which inspired its name.

Its closest living relative is the South American spectacled bear. Like many bears, Arctodus simus was likely an omnivore, eating both plants and animals, and may have scavenged prey left by other predators. It roamed the Earth until around 12,800 years ago.
